IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps shows the comparison between the site of the Beechwood farm in 1950 and today.

Overall, the area of the farm above the river and below the road remains same today as in 1950. Majority changes have been done on the right side of the farm and sheep area.

The designated location for sheep, is mainly divided into two portions as compared to the plan of 1950. One for the solar panels and parking marked on the right top side and camping field with a parking area on the left side. Although the road in both maps is same. In addition, fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables are in the same place in contrast to the previous map, but a small farm shop is added in the fruit trees section.

On the right bottom corner of the farm, barn below the track in old map is shifted on the triangular road end in todays map, while that empty space is changed in holiday cottages. Farmhouse and chickens sheds holds the same place in both plans.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the maps, such as the addition of solar panels, the farm shop, and the conversion of the barn into holiday cottages. You also correctly noted the areas that remained unchanged. However, the response lacks a clear, analytical overview. While you mention that 'majority changes have been done', this is somewhat vague. To reach a higher band, ensure your overview highlights the most significant trends, such as the shift from purely agricultural use to a more diversified commercial and leisure-oriented site. Additionally, some descriptions of locations are slightly imprecise, which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial changes without looking closely at the map.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the general overview to specific details. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition', 'Although', and 'while', which assist in linking ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'Although the road in both maps is same'. The referencing is occasionally unclear; for instance, 'that empty space is changed in holiday cottages' is grammatically clunky and makes the connection between the old barn and the new cottages less smooth than it could be.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the features of the farm effectively. You use relevant terms like 'solar panels', 'holiday cottages', and 'designated location'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'Majority changes have been done' (should be 'The majority of changes') and 'holds the same place' (should be 'remain in the same location'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise verbs and adjectives to describe spatial changes, such as 'transformed', 'replaced', or 'redeveloped', rather than relying on simpler verbs like 'done' or 'changed'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The two maps shows', 'barn... is shifted', 'chickens sheds holds') and missing articles ('in old map', 'in todays map'). Additionally, some sentences are fragmented or lack proper prepositional usage. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
