IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map illustrates how the layout of a farm changed over the past seven decades from 1950 to 2026.
Overall, the farm has undergone significant redevelopment. Sheep farm has been removed completely along with the tracks, whereas short-term residence has been added.
In the first map, a major amount of landed was devoted to sheep farming. The tracks were present between the sheep farm and vegetation. Alongside it, a barn was placed with a farmhouse across it. Chickens were farmed near it where water flowed from the road by passing cultivation of fruit trees, soft fruit as well as vegetables which are located side by side respectively.
Since then, the farmland has undergone extensive renovations. The original tracks have been taken out and roads were laid on it's place. The cattle farm has been completely removed and replaced by a parking area at the entry as well as exit point of the road. Around half of the are was reserved for campers, whereas the other half had solar panels installed on it. The barn was converted into holiday cottages and was relocated at tip of the road triangle. Although farmhouse, chickens and plantations remained unchanged, a farm shop has been introduced at the entrance along the road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the two maps, including the removal of farming areas and the introduction of tourist facilities. You successfully identify the main changes, such as the conversion of the barn and the addition of solar panels and camping areas. However, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting; for instance, you mention the 'cattle farm' was removed, but the original map labels it as a 'sheep farm'. Additionally, the description of the 'road triangle' is slightly confusing as it is not clearly defined in the source image. To reach a higher band, ensure your labels match the prompt exactly and focus on precise spatial descriptions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the 1950 layout to the modern-day changes. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In the first map' and 'Since then'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the use of 'respectively' at the end of the third paragraph is misused as it does not clearly link back to the items mentioned. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods, which helps the reader follow the development of the site.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'cultivation', and 'renovations'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'major amount of landed' (should be 'land') and 'at tip of the road' (should be 'at the tip'). While you attempt to use more specific vocabulary, some phrasing remains slightly unnatural. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips throughout the text. Examples include 'on it's place' (should be 'in its place'), 'around half of the are' (should be 'area'), and 'Although farmhouse... remained unchanged' (missing an article). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for small errors like missing articles, incorrect possessive forms, and subject-verb agreement to ensure your writing is more polished.
