IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided map illustrates the changes that has took place at Beechwood Farm between 1950 and the present day. Overall, it is clear that the farm has experienced significant modernization, transforming from a purely agricultural site into a tourist destination.
In 1950, the eastern side of the farm was completely dedicated to a large area for sheep. Today, this area have been replaced by a camping field, solar panels, and a new parking lot. Furthermore, the original track that connected the main road to the farmhouse has been upgraded into a paved road.
On the western side, the areas for fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables remain mostly the same, but a new farm shop and another parking area was built near the entrance. In the south-east, the old barn was knocked down to make way for holiday cottages, while a new barn was construct in the middle of the road junction. The farmhouse and the chicken area did not chang at all.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the farm's transformation, such as the shift from agricultural use to tourism and the addition of new infrastructure like solar panels and holiday cottages. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific details from the maps. To reach a higher band, ensure you make more explicit comparisons between the two time periods rather than just listing changes. For example, you could contrast the reduction in farming space with the expansion of visitor facilities more directly. Overall, the response covers all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs focusing on different areas of the farm, and a concluding summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'On the western side', and 'In the south-east' to guide the reader through the information. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is always smooth; some sentences feel slightly disconnected, but the overall structure remains clear and effective throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modernization', 'agricultural site', and 'infrastructure'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing. For instance, 'did not chang' contains a spelling error, and 'knocked down' is slightly informal for an academic report. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to map descriptions, such as 'converted', 'demolished', or 'redeveloped', and ensure consistent accuracy in spelling and word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. Specifically, there are subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'changes that has took place' (should be 'have taken') and 'this area have been replaced' (should be 'has been'). Additionally, there are passive voice errors like 'a new barn was construct' (should be 'was constructed'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit your score in this criterion.
