IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The map compares the Beechwood Farm in 1950 and in today's initial time.
In the late 1950's , the farm was open spaced and there were no extra facilities except farming. There was large place to keep sheep for grazing at the top right corner of the map. To access these places, there was a track constructed to reach to our desired places.
However, in today's time, the farm consists of many extra-curriculum activities for the peoples who come to visit the farm. There are two parking spaces constructed at the both ends of the farm. There is a farm shop from where people can buy different farm items. It also provides holiday cottages and camping fields for the visitors. The track is constructed into a road for better transportation.
Overall the farm is very much developed in todays time as compared in 1950. It lacked many things which are useful for the visitors and the farmland.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the addition of the farm shop, parking, and holiday accommodation. However, the description lacks precision. For example, it mentions 'two parking spaces' without specifying their location, and it fails to describe the significant reduction in farmland or the removal of certain features, such as the original sheep grazing area. The overview is somewhat generic and does not highlight the most significant changes, such as the shift from a purely agricultural site to a commercial/tourist-oriented one. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific comparisons and a clearer summary of the overall transformation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for each time period, and a concluding overview. The use of cohesive devices like 'However' and 'In the late 1950's' helps guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'to reach to our desired places,' which is vague. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the connection between the sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to improve the flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'extra-curriculum activities' are misused in this context (as they refer to school activities rather than tourist facilities), and 'peoples' is grammatically incorrect. While you successfully use terms like 'grazing,' 'holiday cottages,' and 'transportation,' the range is limited. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'converted into,' 'replaced by,' or 'situated in the vicinity of.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in today's initial time,' 'the both ends,' and 'compared in 1950' (should be 'compared to 1950'). Additionally, the use of articles and prepositions is inconsistent. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a lack of control over more complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
