Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the changes between 1950 and the present day. However, it fails to provide a clear overview or highlight the most significant trends. The description is somewhat repetitive and lacks precision in identifying the specific locations of features (e.g., 'inside the track'). While the main features are mentioned, the comparison is underdeveloped, and the report lacks a professional tone suitable for an Academic Task 1. The student struggles to accurately interpret the visual data, leading to vague descriptions of the farm's evolution. To improve, focus on grouping information logically—such as permanent features versus new additions—and ensure the overview clearly summarizes the primary transformation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is written as a single block of text, which significantly hinders readability and logical progression. There is a lack of paragraphing, which is essential for organizing information in a report. Cohesive devices are used in a very basic or mechanical way, and some transitions are awkward, such as 'But in today beechwood farm there is a great different'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial changes described. To reach a higher band, you must use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, and employ a wider range of linking words to connect ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. Phrases like 'there are many' and 'in this land' are used frequently, which restricts the range of expression. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'to gave water to the land' instead of 'to provide water' or 'irrigate'. Some terms are used inaccurately, such as 'great different' instead of 'great difference'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher score. Expanding your range to include more descriptive adjectives and precise nouns related to maps and land use would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('It show that', 'road cover the whole area'), article usage ('the beechwood farm', 'a barn and farmhouse'), and sentence structure. Many sentences are simple or run-on, lacking the variety of complex structures needed for higher bands. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing after commas. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses, and practicing the use of complex sentences with subordinate clauses to demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
