Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the farm in 1950 and comparing them with the present day layout. Key changes are identified, such as the replacement of sheep farming with camping fields and solar parks, and the addition of a farm shop and holiday cottages. However, the overview is somewhat embedded within the body of the text rather than presented as a distinct, cohesive summary paragraph. The description includes relevant comparisons and highlights permanent features like the bridge and main road, fulfilling the core requirements of Academic Task 1 effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into a single, overly dense block of text rather than well-defined paragraphs, which negatively impacts the visual and structural coherence. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'firstly', 'which later', and 'on the other side', but referencing and transitions can be mechanical or clunky, as seen in phrases like 'If talking about the farm lands' and 'By the the time passed'. Although the logical progression is generally understandable, the lack of proper paragraphing prevents the essay from achieving a higher band score in this category.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range to communicate the changes on the farm, utilizing topic-specific terms like 'solar parks', 'poultry farm', 'holiday cottages', and 'crop fields'. However, there are numerous lexical and collocational inaccuracies, such as 'streached' (stretched), 'trasportation' (transportation), 'triangle in shape', 'categories' (categorized), and 'add on'. Spelling errors ('sheeps', 'fam', 'strayed') are also present. These limitations place the performance solidly within the Band 5 descriptors, as vocabulary is minimally adequate but features noticeable errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. Frequent grammatical errors impede readability, including missing articles ('to the river side', 'in present time'), incorrect verb tenses and forms ('the bridge across the river is remained', 'crop fields were categories', 'where chickens are stayed'), and run-on sentences with awkward phrasing ('In it's older place new holiday cottages were made and rest of remained as it was'). Punctuation is also neglected in places. This demonstrates a limited range of accurate structures corresponding to Band 5.
