Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram compares how the infrastructure of Beechwood farm changed since 1950 till today.

Overall, the strucure of the farm has dramatically changed involving the construction of new sites, and a few renovations of the existing sites. Furthermore, there has been no geographical expansion of the farm.

In 1950, there was a sheep site holding a considerable space towards the north-east of the map having a track connected starting from east and extending towards northwest, which was connected the main raod . Moreover, around the farm there was a river connected at the back side of the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables, which were connected to the track from the front side. At the center there is a triangular roundabout linked to the barn having farhouse opposite to it. Also there was a site right next to the farm.

In contrast today there are major areas developed leading to improved amenities. The track has been transformed to the road. While entering the forked road from northwest direction at the right hand there is a farm shop, on the left hand there is a addition of parking and camping field after demolishing the sheep site. Moreover, at the same space solar panels are installed at the top right corner, as well as a parking lot connected to the road towards the south direction. After knocking down the barn holiday cottages have been added.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses the prompt by comparing the two maps of Beechwood farm, noting key developments such as the replacement of the sheep site with a camping field and parking, and the addition of holiday cottages. An overview is provided, capturing the main changes. However, some features are described in a slightly disjointed or under-developed manner, such as the exact positioning of the solar panels and the river. Despite these minor lapses, all parts of the task are appropriately covered. The overall response fulfils the requirements of the band descriptors for this level, demonstrating a clear understanding of the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The text is logically organised into four paragraphs, following a clear introduction, overview, and separate body paragraphs for past and present features. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'In 1950', 'Overall', and 'In contrast today'. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and some sentences feel mechanically linked. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the temporal periods, but overall progression within the second body paragraph could be smoother and more cohesive. The logical arrangement provides a coherent overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing maps and spatial changes, using terms like 'infrastructure', 'renovations', 'demolishing', and 'transformed'. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'a sheep site holding a considerable space' instead of 'an area dedicated to sheep', and 'strucure' (a spelling error). Less common items are attempted with varying degrees of success. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main features clearly, occasional inaccuracies in word choice prevent the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'having a track connected starting from east...'). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'changed since 1950 till today' instead of 'have changed between 1950 and the present day', and missing articles or preposition errors (e.g., 'at the right hand'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors persist, they do not severely impede communication. The control of grammar aligns well with a band 6.0 level.
