IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph illustrates compares the changes in a farm site, named Beechwood Farm, in 1950 and today.
Overall, the farm has changed to a great extent. Although most of the old sites are still there, new public amenities have been added to the farm site. Transport infrastructure is still the same.
in 1950, the farm had fruit tress, soft fruits, and vegetables between the river and the track. In the southeast direction, a farmhouse and chicken area were there, while a barn was there beside the farmhouse. Apart from that, a large sheep area was there. The main road was running from north to west.
In 2000, fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables are still there, with the addition of a farm shop in the fruit trees field. The track was converted into a proper road. Furthermore, a parking is made right in front of the farm shop across the road. Additionally, the sheep area is divided into two sections: one containing camping field and parking, and parking and solar panels are installed in the other one. Moreover, barn is demolished from there and shifted to the west of chicken area, while holiday cottages are made besid

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The candidate attempts to summarise the main features of the maps comparing the farm in 1950 and the present day. An overview is provided, noting that new public amenities have been added. However, the response suffers from significant incomplete sections, particularly trailing off at the end of the text ('while holiday cottages are made besid'). Furthermore, there are chronological inconsistencies, such as mentioning 'In 2000' instead of 'today' as prompted by the rubric. While key features like the farm shop, parking, and solar panels are identified, the lack of complete sentences and under-developed comparisons prevent the response from achieving a higher band. It satisfies the task only partially.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction and an overview, which shows some rudimentary structure. However, the logical progression breaks down significantly toward the end due to the abrupt halt in the final sentence. Cohesive devices are used minimally (e.g., 'Although', 'Furthermore', 'Additionally'), but referencing is sometimes clumsy, such as shifting between 'there' and 'the other one'. Paragraphing is also irregular, with single-line paragraphs that disrupt the flow of the response. Overall organisation is adequate to show a basic comparison, but cohesion is mechanical and poorly managed in the second half.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, relying heavily on terms provided in the prompt or simple functional words ('farm', 'area', 'road', 'trees'). There are some attempts at less common vocabulary such as 'amenities', 'demolished', and 'solar panels', but word choice and collocation are occasionally awkward, for instance, 'a parking is made' instead of 'a car park is constructed'. Spelling is mostly accurate, but lexical flexibility is restricted, which limits the precision required for a task-1 description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Although most of the old sites are still there, new public amenities have been added'. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout, including 'The graph illustrates compares' (double verb error), 'a parking is made' (incorrect noun usage), and 'fruit tress' (spelling/typographical error). Complex structures are frequently flawed, and the uncompleted sentence at the very end indicates a lack of control over sentence construction. Errors occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader.
