IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph illustration compares the changes in a farm site, named Beechwood Farm, in 1950 and today. Overall, the farm has changed to a great extent. Although most of the old sites are still there, new public amenities have been added to the farm site. The transport infrastructure is still the same.

In 1950, the farm had fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables between the river and the track. In the southeast direction, a farmhouse and chicken area were there, while a barn was there beside the farmhouse. Apart from that, a large sheep area was there. The main road was running from north to west.

In 2000, fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables are still there, with the addition of a farm shop in the fruit trees field. The track was converted into a proper road. Furthermore, a parking area was made right in front of the farm shop across the road. Additionally, the sheep area is divided into two sections: one containing a camping field and parking, and parking and solar panels are installed in the other one. Moreover, the barn is demolished from there and shifted to the west of the chicken area, while holiday cottages are made beside the farmhouse.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student successfully summarises the main features of the farm in 1950 and today, providing clear comparisons as required by the prompt. An overview is present, outlining the significant changes that have taken place over time, such as the introduction of public amenities and the retention of certain historical areas like fruit trees and vegetables. Key features are reported, including the conversion of the track into a road, the addition of a farm shop, and the relocation of the barn. However, there is a minor chronological inconsistency in the third paragraph, where the writer refers to 'In 2000' despite the prompt stating 'today', and a few specific spatial details could be more thoroughly contrasted. Overall, the response covers the requirements of the task well, earning a band score of 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory overview to the past layout and finally the present layout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different temporal periods and aspects of the site. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Although', 'In 1950', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, particularly with the frequent use of phrases like 'was there' and 'are still there'. Despite these minor limitations, the information flows reasonably well and is easy to follow, supporting a band score of 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a map or plan, including terms such as 'infrastructure', 'amenities', 'converted', and 'demolished'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices and phrasing feel slightly unnatural or repetitive, such as 'the barn is demolished from there and shifted' or repeating 'area was there'. Spelling is generally accurate, and occasional vocabulary errors do not impede communication. The lexical range is sufficient for the task, meeting the criteria for a band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses ('Although most of the old sites are still there...') and relative clauses. There is a mixture of past and present tense control to reflect the temporal contrast between 1950 and today. However, there are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'the main road was running from north to west' and mixing tenses inconsistently in the body paragraphs. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are present, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. This performance aligns with a band score of 6.0.
