Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the two maps comparing Beechwood Farm in 1950 and today, identifying key transformations such as the replacement of the cattle grazing ground by a camping field and solar panels, and the expansion of fruit trees into a farm shop. The student successfully points out features that remained unchanged, such as soft fruits, vegetables, the farmhouse, and chickens. While the overview captures the general trend of development towards a tourist-oriented site, some details are slightly imprecise, such as the relocation of the barn and the addition of holiday cottages. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, placing this performance securely in Band 6.5, which rounds to 6.0 based on available increments or fits best at Band 6.0 due to under-developed comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts a logical progression, moving from general changes to specific alterations and an overall summary. Cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'In addition', and 'overall' are used to connect ideas, though some referencing is slightly faulty, as seen in phrases like 'moved biside vegetable which is directly linked with road and holiday cottages has been built in place of it'. Paragraphing is attempted, with an introductory sentence, body paragraphs, and an overall conclusion, though the physical formatting on the page is somewhat cramped. Despite these mechanical flaws in cohesion and referencing, the progression is clear enough to follow without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'tourist oriented', 'social requirements', and 'modern technology'. However, there are several noticeable spelling errors ('illustrates' with plural subject map, 'expended' instead of 'expanded', 'biside', 'orinted') and inappropriate word choices ('parkings' instead of 'parking areas'). While these lexical errors occur throughout the text, they do not severely impede communication because the context remains clear. This fits the Band 6 descriptor where vocabulary is adequate for the task but contains inaccuracies in spelling and word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses ('which is replaced by camping field') and passive voice constructions ('has been moved', 'has been built'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The two maps illustrates'), missing articles ('biside vegetable'), and tense inconsistencies when shifting between past and present descriptions. Punctuation is also weak, particularly with capitalization in 'overall,Beechwood'. These errors represent a typical mix of successful simple structures and flawed complex attempts, aligning with the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, where errors persist but rarely impede overall comprehension.
