Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The candidate attempts to describe the main features of the farm in 1950 and today, mentioning elements such as the farmhouse, barns, fruit trees, holiday cottages, and a parking lot. However, the response suffers from significant weaknesses in task completion. Rather than providing an objective Academic Task 1 summary, the writer adopts an inappropriate personal conversational tone by stating, "Firstly i would like to talk about..." and "I can clearly see that...". Furthermore, several key comparisons between the two time periods are missing or poorly articulated, and the overall development of the information is limited. These shortcomings place the response at Band 4.5, where the report is basic and lacks the formal reporting register required for Academic Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is organized into paragraphs, including an introduction, body sections, and a brief conclusion. However, the logical progression is weak and lacks overall cohesion. The writer uses basic sequencing markers such as "Firstly", "Thirdley", "Forthly", and "Then i would like to ove to...", but these feel mechanical and do not create smooth transitions between ideas. Referencing is also faulty in places, such as "the old once" instead of "the old one", which obscures the connection between ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structuring of information within the paragraphs lacks clarity and coherence. Overall, the organization is disjointed, corresponding to a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text. Examples include "maintaned" instead of "maintained", "vagetables" instead of "vegetables", "sheeps" instead of "sheep", and "olf" instead of "old". The writer attempts some topic-specific vocabulary related to the maps, such as "farmhouse", "barn", and "holiday cottages", but the overall lexical range is basic and inadequate for a higher score. Furthermore, frequent lexical errors such as "upward a sheep area" and "upside of the holiday cottages" cause difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to Band 4.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly constructed attempts at complex sentences, which frequently contain errors. Examples of grammatical and punctuation errors include "has one big farmhouse where they grow chickens" (tense and collocation issues), "which is looking like a playground a held a very huge area or the farm", and the misuse of lowercase letters for the pronoun "i". Punctuation is also problematic, particularly around commas and semicolons, as seen in "In conclusion ; there is a lot of changes...". These frequent errors and the lack of complex structures place this criterion at Band 4.5.
