Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram below illustrates the view of a beechwood farm ranging from the year 1950 to present scenario.

Overall, there are varied developments over the years. Solar panels have been added to produce clear power and minimise pollution. Moreover construction of holiday cottages and camping went hand in hand resulting in attracting a lot of population to spend quality time together.

In 1950, there were a considerable amount of fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables resulting in greenery all around the farm. Additionally there was a running track made specially for physcially fit individuals. There was a specific areas designed for animals like sheep and chickens.

Likewise in current time there is significant development resulting in making the farm environmentally sustainable by adding solar panels. In order to avoid congestion, parking lots have been made because of the number of visitors visiting cottages and camping field. A significant change is that track is made into the road for the travel purposes. Furthermore the road is now directly connected to the barn. In contrast to 1950 and today, the farm has made substantial development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the changes shown in the two maps of Beechwood Farm between 1950 and the present. An overview is provided in the second paragraph mentioning developments such as solar panels and holiday cottages. However, the response fails to adequately report and compare the key features of the two maps. For instance, the student refers to a 'running track made specially for physcially fit individuals', which misinterprets the agricultural tracks shown on the map as a running track. Furthermore, many significant changes—such as the conversion of the barns and the addition of a farm shop and camping field—are either generalised or missed entirely. The description lacks a systematic, data-driven comparison of spatial changes. This places the response in Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, including a brief introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. There is an attempt to organise information logically, moving from general observations to specific features. However, the progression between ideas is sometimes disjointed, and cohesive devices are used repetitively or mechanically (e.g., 'Moreover', 'Additionally', 'Likewise'). Paragraphing is visually present, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks sophistication. For example, the transition between discussing agricultural plots and the track in the third paragraph is abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but overall, the structural flow is basic and characteristic of Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate basic concepts, such as 'environmentally sustainable', 'congestion', and 'substantial development'. However, there are notable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'clear power' instead of 'clean energy' or 'renewable energy', and 'physcially fit individuals' derived from a misinterpretation of farm tracks. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'physcially'. While the writer attempts some less common lexical items, the frequent lexical inaccuracies and inappropriate collocations restrict the score to Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Solar panels have been added to produce clear power and minimise pollution.' and 'In order to avoid congestion, parking lots have been made because of the number of visitors...'. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several minor errors in punctuation and grammar, such as missing commas after introductory prepositional phrases (e.g., 'In 1950' and 'In current time'). While complex structures are attempted, their execution often leads to awkward phrasing or minor inaccuracies. The majority of simple sentences are accurate, supporting a Band 6 level for grammar.
