IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagrams illustrate how the layout of Beechwood Farm has been transformed from 1950 to today.
Overall, it is evident that the farmland has undergone radical modifications, including the addition of several infrastructures, a redevelopment of the farm estate, and the recreation of commutable paths. The exceptions left intact will be the main road on the top left of the farm, which crosses a river.
In the past, there was a track running from the main road to the eastern part of the farm, which divided the area into two sides. The northern site was particularly a pasture for sheep, while the southern ones had separate planting fields for fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables on the left. Besides, a barn, a farmhouse, and an area for chickens were situated in the southeast of the land.
At present, the track is converted to a road that makes way for vehicles to easily access the farmland, followed by the addition of parking lots and a farm shop at each end of the road. The barn is moved to the middle of the road, and the original site of the barn is used for holiday cottages. Furthermore, a camping field and solar panels have been newly added at the expense of the sheep grazing zone. Meanwhile, the farmhouse and chicken area remain unchanged

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear comparison between the two maps of Beechwood Farm. The introduction successfully paraphrases the prompt, and an effective overview highlights the major changes, such as the radical infrastructural developments and the removal of the sheep grazing zone. Key features are reported accurately, including the conversion of the track into a road, the addition of the farm shop, parking lots, camping field, solar panels, and holiday cottages, alongside the elements that remained unchanged, such as the farmhouse and chicken area. The information is well-selected and supported by the visual data without significant omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression from the introduction to the overview, the past layout, and finally the present layout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct time periods and themes. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well to guide the reader through the comparisons (e.g., 'In the past', 'At present', 'Meanwhile'). However, a few transitional links feel slightly mechanical, and referencing could be smoother in places, such as 'followed by the addition of parking lots', which slightly blurs the sequence of spatial locations. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for describing maps and spatial changes. Less common items such as 'radical modifications', 'redevelopment', 'commutable paths', and 'grazing zone' are used with a reasonable degree of precision and style. There are minor vocabulary and collocation slips, such as 'addition of several infrastructures' (infrastructure is generally uncountable) and 'the barn is moved to the middle of the road' (the map shows the barn is near the road junction rather than relocated to the middle of the road itself). Nevertheless, the vocabulary is more than adequate to convey the meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The student displays a healthy mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and adverbial time markers (e.g., 'The diagrams illustrate how the layout...'). There is good control of verb tenses, appropriately shifting from the past tense for the 1950 map to the present tense for the current layout. A majority of the sentences are grammatically sound, though minor errors appear, such as 'The exceptions left intact will be the main road' (tense shift inconsistency) and the awkward passive phrasing 'the barn is moved'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication.
