Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main transformations shown in the two maps of Beechwood Farm. The student correctly notes the replacement of sheep with a camping field and solar panels, and the conversion of the track into a road. However, there are notable inaccuracies regarding spatial relationships and features; for instance, the text claims the barn moved to the middle of the road and holiday cottages are on the original location of the barn, which does not accurately reflect the visual data where the barn remains in the south and holiday cottages are built further north. Furthermore, the overview is fragmented into broken sentence fragments ('Including the several architectures. A re-development of the farm and recreation of the path.'). While some key features are addressed, the lack of precision and underdeveloped overview place this performance at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay attempts a logical structure by starting with an introduction and overview, followed by body details. However, the progression is frequently disrupted by poor sentence boundaries and punctuation errors. For example, the sentence 'In the past there was a track... beside a barn a farmhouse and an area for the chicken.' runs on awkwardly without proper partitioning. Paragraphing is minimal and poorly controlled, with the second body paragraph crammed with multiple distinct changes without clear cohesive signposting. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, leading to a mechanical and sometimes confusing flow of information. This corresponds to a Band 5.0 for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited, basic vocabulary range with noticeable errors in word choice and morphology. Examples include 'gone significant modifications', 'architectures' (used incorrectly to mean buildings), and 'the chicken' (instead of chickens). Phrasing such as 'sheep herd' and 'plant field' shows a restricted control of collocations. While the vocabulary is adequate to convey a basic topic about farm changes, frequent lexical inaccuracies and non-standard collocations cause some strain for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that frequently break down due to structural errors. There are significant punctuation and capitalization issues, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters or creating sentence fragments like 'Including the several architectures.' Errors are frequent throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies and missing articles, as seen in 'track is converted to the road' and 'holiday cottage are on the original location'. These frequent errors occasionally impede communication, justifying a Band 5.0 score.
