IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The two maps illustrate how Beechwood farm has changed from 1950 to the present.
In 1950, there was a track at centre the Farm which was replaced with the road. There was sheep at right top of the farm that changed into solar panel. Sheep were altered the camping field and parking area.
Similarly, Barn was at right corner below the track that changed the location and placed centre of Farm below triangle track.
Furthermore, in the fruit trees the farm shop are adding at the left below site corner. Finally, Barn was modified the Holiday Cottages at left site bellow the road.
Overall, it is obvious that the Farm has rearranging significantly and more infrastructure has built in Beechwood Farm such as solar panels, camping field, parking areas, farm shop, holiday cottages over the periods.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 136 words, which negatively impacts the score. While the candidate attempts to summarise the main changes between 1950 and the present, the selection of features is somewhat confused and inaccurate regarding locations and transformations. For instance, the text claims that 'sheep at right top of the farm that changed into solar panel,' whereas solar panels are in the north-east and sheep were replaced by camping fields and parking areas. Additionally, there are several misinterpretations of building relocations. However, an overview is present in the concluding paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is organised into four brief paragraphs, including a clear introduction and conclusion. However, the logical progression within the body paragraphs is frequently disrupted by confusing spatial references (e.g., 'Barn was at right corner below the track that changed the location and placed centre of Farm'). Cohesive devices are used mechanically or incorrectly, such as 'Furthermore' and 'Finally,' which do not logically connect the specific map transformations being discussed. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences often feel isolated rather than building a cohesive narrative of change.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms such as 'changed,' 'moved,' and 'added.' There are noticeable lexical and collocation errors, such as 'at centre the Farm,' 'right top,' and 'has rearranging significantly.' Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success (e.g., 'infrastructure'). While the meaning is occasionally retrievable, word choice inaccuracies and awkward phrasing restrict the score to this band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic past tense constructions with frequent errors. Examples of grammatical errors include 'there was sheep' (subject-verb agreement), 'Sheep were altered the camping field' (passive voice misuse), and 'more infrastructure has built' (missing passive form). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent structural errors and awkward phrasing hinder readability.
