IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given maps compare the layout of the Beechwood Farm between 1950 and today.

Overall, the farm has undergone significant additions while some buildings have been re-purposed.

Beginning with the northwest quadrant there was a road connecting the track of the farm with the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables fields which all met at a triangular junction, while, today the track has been developed into a proper road and a farm shop was opened by the fruit trees

A river flowed from the southwest quadrant which curved to the southeast.

Also, there was a barn, a farmhouse and a poultry house for chickens in the southeast, out of which the barn was re-purposed to holiday cottages and a new small barn was set up which met at the triangular junction in the middle. However, the farmhouse, chicken area and crop fields remain unchanged.

In 1950, the northeast quadrant was just dedicated to a sheep which is today used as a multi-purpose area for camping along with some tree plantations, parking facilities and a particular area dedicated for the solar panels.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by comparing the layout of Beechwood Farm in 1950 with its current layout. A clear overview is provided, highlighting the addition of new facilities and the repurposing of existing structures. The main features are selected and reported appropriately, such as the conversion of the sheep area into a camping and leisure site, the opening of a farm shop, and the transformation of the original barn into holiday cottages. However, there are some minor factual misinterpretations, such as stating that 'the farmhouse, chicken area and crop fields remain unchanged' when the map shows the new holiday cottages located where the old barn was, and the crop fields underwent some spatial adjustments. Overall, the response covers the visual data well and provides a clear summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is logically organised into clear paragraphs, following a natural progression from an introduction and overall statement to specific regional comparisons of the farm map. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Beginning with the northwest quadrant', 'Also', and 'However'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to group related information, though some sentences are slightly run-on or lack punctuation, which occasionally affects the flow. For example, the sentence beginning with 'Beginning with the northwest quadrant there was a road...' is overly long and lacks necessary internal punctuation. Nonetheless, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a map comparison task, employing terms such as 'quadrant', 're-purposed', 'triangular junction', and 'multi-purpose area'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'dedicated to a sheep' instead of 'dedicated to sheep' or 'used for sheep', and 'poultry house for chickens' which is slightly redundant. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the response. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to use more sophisticated lexical items and precise collocations to describe spatial changes without repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and prepositional phrases. There are instances of grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, particularly run-on sentences that lack commas to separate distinct clauses (e.g., 'Beginning with the northwest quadrant there was a road...'). Additionally, prepositional use can be slightly awkward at times. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the response. The control over simple structures is good, while complex forms show moderate control.
