Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The student attempts to describe the changes between the two maps, noting the addition of holiday cottages, a farm shop, a camping field, and solar panels. However, the response falls short of fully satisfying the requirements of Academic Task 1. Crucially, the student introduces a significant amount of irrelevant personal commentary and speculation not present in the source data, such as discussing whether solar panels are affordable and the impact of technology on people's health. Furthermore, key features of the maps, such as the conversion of the sheep area into a camping field, the expansion of paths into roads, and the retention of the farmhouse and barn, are either inaccurate or under-reported. There is no clear overview provided. Consequently, the task achievement is limited.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response is divided into three brief paragraphs, which provide a basic framework. However, the logical progression is weak due to abrupt topic shifts and digressions into unrelated commentary regarding modern technology and health. Cohesive devices are used very simplistically or incorrectly (e.g., repeating 'Solar panels were also not installed in 1950, and camping field was also not present', and awkward transitions like 'But however'). Referencing and substitution are poorly managed, meaning that the relationship between ideas often feels disjointed. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal organization lacks coherence and clear structuring.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical range is quite limited and repetitive. The student uses basic vocabulary throughout, such as 'stuff', 'farmhouse', 'holiday cottages', 'roads', 'barn', and 'river'. There are also lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'uptill now', 'the quantity of there were no barn', and people not 'having so many income streams'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are either inaccurate or colloquial. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the overall lexical resource is inadequate for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The student demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying predominantly on simple sentences and basic compound forms with frequent errors. Examples of grammatical inaccuracy include 'the quantity of there were no barn', 'people used different means of farming like having animals like sheep but today', and 'people really on machinery'. Subordinate clauses and complex structures are attempted (e.g., 'This shows how technology has influenced in our lives...'), but they are frequently flawed in syntax and preposition usage. Errors are frequent and occasionally obscure the intended meaning.
