IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The rendered map plans depict the information regarding the site of a Beechwood farm area in 1950 and the present time after modifications.
Having a quick glance over the charts, the sheep area in 1950 in the North site of the map is divided into four parts for parking, camping field, solar panels and parking in the East side whilst, the track converted into road in the center of the chart and the river from the South moving towards the North and the East remained unchanged.
Looking at the remaining transformations, the space of the fruit trees in the initial time period is divided into two sections such as farm shop and fruit trees. However, soft fruits, vegetables, chickens and farmhouse stayed constant while, barn is connected to roads in the South of the map and space of barn in the East of chart is Partitioned into three holiday cottages.
Thus, from the overall analysis, it is lucid that the whole map in the initial time frame covered open areas with few facilities however, in present time, the transformations has completely changed the area with alot of modifications.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task by comparing the two maps of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and today. An overview is provided, noting the significant transformation from open areas to various new facilities. Key features are reported, such as the conversion of the sheep area into a camping field, parking, and solar panels, as well as the addition of a farm shop and holiday cottages. However, some of the spatial relationships and transformations are slightly confused or imprecise, such as the mention of the barn's location and partitioning, but overall, the main trends and changes are adequately selected and reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organized into four logical paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, body details, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Having a quick glance over', 'whilst', and 'However'. However, some transitions and referencing are a bit mechanical or awkward, such as 'Having a quick glance over the charts' (which are actually maps/plans, not charts). Paragraphing is present and appropriate, and there is a clear progression from the general overview to specific transformations.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for a map task, including terms like 'modifications', 'transformed', 'partitioned', and 'unchanged'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and inappropriate word choices, such as referring to maps as 'charts', using 'initial time period' instead of 'past' or '1950', and awkward phrasing like 'space of the fruit trees'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the precision in vocabulary is limited, falling into the Band 6 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as participial clauses ('Having a quick glance over the charts...') and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, including dangling modifiers, preposition errors ('in the North site of the map'), and issues with article use and plurals ('alot of modifications'). Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear and communication is not severely impeded.
