IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans illustrate the site of Beechwood farm before and after refurbishment.
Overall, the farm modernized and expanded by building roads, introducing parking and installing solar panels. There are new amenities for entertainment as well such as holiday cottages and camping fields.
In the past, the layout was quite simple with unpaved roads. There was a large area dedicated for sheep in the northeastern side. Adjacent to the river on the south were a barn, a farmhouse and chickens. Slightly towards the west, there were fruit trees besides soft fruits and vegetables.
Today, the farm has some notable changes. There is provision of new facilities for example construction of roads with parking on both ends connected to a barn. For leisure, people can do camping on the field, stay at holiday cottages and can use a farmhouse for this purpose. A new powerhouse can be seen with solar panels on the northeastern side. Fruit trees now have a farm shop as well. The rest is almost same as in the past.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses the task by comparing the two maps of Beechwood farm in 1950 and today, noting major developments such as the introduction of roads, holiday cottages, parking areas, and solar panels. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the general modernization and expansion of the site. Key features are reported, such as the sheep area being replaced and new leisure amenities being added. However, there are minor factual misinterpretations; for instance, the student states that people 'can use a farmhouse for this purpose' (referring to holiday stays) and that the fruit trees now have a farm shop, whereas the shop is situated adjacent to them rather than inside them. Despite these minor inaccuracies, all parts of the prompt are covered.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, following a clear progression from introduction to overview, past layout, and current changes. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader through the text, such as 'In the past', 'Today', and 'Overall'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel a bit mechanical, and some transitions could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different periods and ideas, ensuring the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to maps and changes such as 'refurbishment', 'modernized', 'amenities', and 'layout'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices are slightly unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'provision of new facilities' or 'the rest is almost same'. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the response. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of sophisticated vocabulary when describing spatial relationships and transformations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating reasonable control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'Adjacent to the river on the south were a barn...' and 'For leisure, people can do camping on the field...'. While there are some awkward phrasings and minor grammatical slips, such as 'do camping on the field' instead of 'go camping', these errors do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally handled well, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate, supporting clear comprehension.
