Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map compares the transformation of Beechwood farm site of 1950, with the current design of the same farm.

Overall, it is evident from the map that the area underwent substantial redevelopment over the period, with numerous facilities being introduced while only few remained unchanged.

In 1950, the farm was having track, which is now facilitated with roads. While entering the track from main road, a huge area was reserved for sheep in 1950. However, some of the area was converted to camping field and parking facilites, remaining of the area was used to generate electricity through solar panels.

While farmhouse area and chicken area remained at the same place, the area which used to be barn in 1950, was reconstructed to holiday cottage; whereas, barn was shifted near the chicken area. The area used to grow vegetables and soft fruits remained unchanged. However, minor change was done near fruit tree are by developing a farm shop.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by comparing the 1950 Beechwood farm layout with the current plan. An appropriate overall trend is identified, noting substantial redevelopment with the introduction of new facilities. Key features are reported, such as the conversion of the sheep area into a camping field and solar panels, the addition of a farm shop, holiday cottages, and parking spaces, alongside features that remained unchanged like the fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables fields. While some minor details could be slightly more elaborated, the response covers all relevant areas well and satisfies the requirements of Academic Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is structured logically with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs covering specific spatial transformations. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader through the comparison, such as 'Overall, it is evident', 'While entering', and 'However'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate general trends from specific geographical changes. Although referencing is mostly clear, a few cohesive links feel slightly mechanical, but overall progression is maintained throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms like 'redevelopment', 'constructed', 'shifted', and 'facilities'. There are some awkward collocations or minor lexical inaccuracies, such as 'the farm was having track' instead of 'the farm had tracks' and 'fruit tree are' instead of 'fruit tree area'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meanings clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordinate clauses ('While entering the track from main road', 'while only few remained unchanged'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing instances, such as missing articles ('was having track', 'near fruit tree are') and punctuation slips. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of basic sentences are comprehensible.
