IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps compare the original layout of Beechwood Farm in 1950 with its current form.

Overall, the farm has undergone major changes, most notably the sheep area, which became divided into a camping field and solar panel area. Furthermore, they have switched the barn place and made some transformations in the fruit tree site. The track developed and became a road.

Solar panels and a camping field were established in the initial sheep area to attract visitors and enhance the sustainability of the site, and they added two different parking spots for each place. Furthermore, the initial pathway was a simple track and now became a principal road.

Moreover, in the southern area, they have added a small farm shop in the fruit tree site and switched the place of the main barn. Also, they have cut the ancient barn into three pieces and made there a place for holiday cottages. The river and the car road remained as before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses the task by comparing the 1950 layout of Beechwood Farm with the current map. The candidate provides a clear overview highlighting major transformations, such as the conversion of the sheep area into a camping field and solar panels, and the development of the track into a road. Key features are reported, including the addition of the farm shop, parking areas, and holiday cottages. However, some details are slightly inaccurate or speculative (e.g., stating they 'cut the ancient barn into three pieces' when the old barn became holiday cottages while a new barn was positioned elsewhere). Nevertheless, the main features and comparisons are adequately covered, meeting the requirements of a Band 6.5-7.0, supported well by clear overview statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs detailing specific spatial changes. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Also'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and referencing occasionally lacks absolute precision, such as 'switched the barn place' or vague pronominal references ('they'). Paragraphing is appropriately handled, separating the overview from detailed body points. Overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow throughout, corresponding well to a Band 6.5 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a task 1 response, using terms like 'undergone major changes', 'sustainable', 'transformations', and 'established'. There are some awkward collocations and slightly informal phrasings, such as 'switched the barn place' and 'cut the ancient barn into three pieces', which detract from precision. Spelling is accurate throughout the text, and while less common lexical items are attempted with mixed success, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, aligning with a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('which became divided into') and compound sentences. Grammatical control is generally good, with accurate use of past and present tenses to contrast the two time periods ('compare', 'has undergone', 'became'). There are occasional minor awkwardnesses in phrasing and preposition choice, but these do not impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are error-free, and complex structures are attempted with reasonable success, placing this securely at a Band 6.5.
