IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps compare the original layout of Beechwood Farm in 1950 with its current form.

Overall, the farm has undergone major changes, most notably the sheep area, which became divided into a camping field and solar panel area. Furthermore, they have switched the barn place and made some transformations in the fruit tree site. The track developed and became a road.

Solar panels and a camping field were established in the initial sheep area to attract visitors and enhance the sustainability of the site, and they have also added two different parking spots for each place. Furthermore, the initial pathway was a simple track and now became a principal road.

Moreover, on the southern side, a small farm shop in the fruit tree area has been added, and they have switched the place of the main barn. Also, they have cut the ancient barn into three pieces and made a place there for holiday cottages. The river and the car road remained as before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate successfully addresses all parts of the task by comparing the two plans of Beechwood Farm. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting major transformations such as the conversion of the sheep area and the development of the track into a road. Key features are selected and reported, including the addition of the camping field, solar panels, farm shop, and holiday cottages, alongside the retention of the river. However, some descriptions contain minor inaccuracies, such as stating that they 'cut the ancient barn into three pieces' when the old barn appears to have been removed and replaced by holiday cottages in that zone. Overall, the response covers the main trends effectively, meeting the requirements of a Band 6.5 to 7.0, and is best placed at Band 6.5 due to slight inaccuracies in spatial interpretation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is coherent overall with a clear logical arrangement. The text is divided into four paragraphs, beginning with a brief introduction, followed by an overview, and then two body paragraphs detailing specific changes in different areas of the farm. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Also', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, such as distinguishing between the northern and southern sections. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate general trends from specific geographical details. Overall, cohesion is managed adequately, fitting the Band 6.5 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'transformations', 'sustainability', and 'established'. However, there are some imprecise word choices and unnatural collocations, such as 'switched the barn place' instead of 'relocated the barn', and 'cut the ancient barn into three pieces' instead of 'demolished and replaced'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. The lexical range is sufficient for precision in places, but the colloquial phrasing prevents it from reaching Band 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The candidate successfully uses subordinate clauses and complex structures, such as 'Solar panels and a camping field were established... to attract visitors'. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'now became a principal road' (tense inconsistency) and 'switched the place of the main barn', but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. Punctuation is generally sound. The control of grammar corresponds to a solid Band 6.0.
