Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two pictures illustrate how Beechwood Farm has changed from 1950 to today.

Overall, Beechwood Farm has undergone significant changes, with many original features being removed and replaced. Recreational and many other facilities have been added, including a farm shop, parking, camping fields, solar panels, holiday cottages, and roads, while soft fruits, vegetables, and the farmhouse remain unchanged.

In 1950, there was a track that ran through the center of the Beechwood Farm, which has now been replaced by a road. The sheep on the north side of the road, which was covered by sheep, has been transformed into a parking area on the north-eastern side along the road, a camping field for residents, and trees. Next to this camping field, solar panels have been installed, and a parking area has been built.

On the southern side of the road, a farm shop with fruit trees. Furthermore, the barn has been replaced at the end of the road. Moreover, the area that was occupied by the barn has now been replaced by holiday cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully highlights the main changes between 1950 and today, noting the replacement of the original track with a road and the conversion of agricultural areas into commercial and recreational facilities. An overview is present in the second paragraph, capturing the overall trend of transformation. However, some details are inaccurate or confusingly stated, such as claiming that 'soft fruits, vegetables, and the farmhouse remain unchanged' when the surrounding layout and structures underwent substantial modifications. Additionally, the description of the southern side of the road contains confusing syntax ('a farm shop with fruit trees') and misinterprets the spatial relationships of the barn and holiday cottages. Nonetheless, the task is addressed with a clear attempt to summarise key spatial shifts, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is organized into four logical paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific spatial changes. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the comparisons, such as 'Overall', 'In 1950', 'On the southern side', and 'Furthermore'. However, paragraphing and referencing are occasionally awkward. For instance, the transition between discussing the northern and southern areas feels slightly disjointed, and referencing pronouns like 'which was covered by sheep' create minor cohesion faults. Overall arrangement is coherent, but referencing clarity prevents it from achieving a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, using appropriate terms such as 'undergone significant changes', 'transformed', and 'recreational facilities'. Less common lexical items are attempted, including 'holiday cottages' and 'solar panels'. However, there are notable lexical and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'the sheep on the north side of the road, which was covered by sheep' (repetitive and imprecise phrasing) and confusing word choices when describing the buildings. While spelling is accurate, word choice limitations and minor awkwardness restrict the score to this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses ('which has now been replaced by a road') and passive constructions ('have been installed', 'has been built'). There are grammatical errors and awkward phrasing that slightly disrupt flow, notably in sentences like 'the barn has been replaced at the end of the road' and 'a farm shop with fruit trees' (which lacks a main verb). However, the errors do not impede overall communication, and the majority of simpler structures remain accurate.
