Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graphic illustrates the evolution of Beechwood Farm's layout and features from 1950 to today.

Overall, in spite of the addition of several new features to the farm, its primary layout has remained unchanged.

In 1950, Beechwood Farm comprised five main sections, including the fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, sheep, and the chicken sections. The chicken section also housed the farmhouse and the barn to the north of the poultry. All five sections are connected through a track that forms a triangular shape in the middle of the farm. A river from the northwest of the farm bounded it on the south.

Today, the fruit section contains a farm shop, while the soft fruits and vegetables sections are untouched. The network of roads has replaced the tracks. Holiday cottages have replaced the barns, which has now moved to the triangular section of the road. The sheep section has been partititioned into three new sections, namely solar famrs,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially because it trails off mid-sentence and fails to complete the description of the changes between 1950 and today. While an overview is attempted and some main features like the fruit trees and soft fruits are mentioned, important new additions such as the camping field, parking areas, and solar panels are largely omitted due to the incomplete ending. To reach a higher level, the response must cover all parts of the visual data fully, presenting a complete comparison of the farm's layout without abrupt stops.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, overview, past layout, and current changes. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the text, such as 'In 1950' and 'Today'. However, referencing and progression are disrupted at the end of the text where the sentence cuts off unfinished ('namely solar famrs,'). Managing transitions and ensuring every sentence is fully completed would enhance the logical flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a task describing maps, employing functional terms like 'evolution', 'layout', 'comprised', and 'partitioned'. There are some successful attempts at less common lexical items. However, there is a minor spelling slip at the very end ('famrs' instead of 'farms'), and word choice can occasionally feel standard. To achieve a higher score, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of precise, less common vocabulary relating to spatial changes with consistent accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over past and present tenses ('comprised', 'has remained', 'contains'). Grammatical structures are generally clear, and errors do not impede communication. For instance, 'The chicken section also housed the farmhouse and the barn' is structurally sound. However, the presence of an incomplete trailing sentence at the end limits the range. Maintaining consistent accuracy across more complex comparative structures will push this criterion further.
