Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by identifying several major changes, such as the addition of a camping field, solar panels, and a farm shop. However, the word count requirement is not met, as the response falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 123 words. Consequently, some key features and comparisons are under-developed or omitted entirely, such as the comprehensive tracking of how the road network and layout evolved. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure the minimum length is met and provide a more fully developed, detailed account of the changes shown in the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a basic attempt at organization, beginning with an introductory sentence and attempting an overview, followed by body details. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the paragraphing is underdeveloped. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'Meanwhile,' and 'In additon,' which affects the logical flow between ideas. References are occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow spatial relationships between the 1950 map and the current plan. Improving paragraph structure and using cohesive links more naturally would enhance the overall readability and flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical range is limited but minimally adequate for describing the basic changes, utilizing terms like 'developed,' 'replaced,' and 'converted.' There are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation, such as 'additon,' 'tress,' and 'extented,' which occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts are marred by inaccuracies. To improve, the student needs to expand their vocabulary related to urban or rural change and pay closer attention to spelling and precise lexical collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing relies on a limited range of sentence structures, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and missing articles, such as 'The map illustrate' instead of 'maps illustrate' or 'The map illustrates,' and missing plural markers. Attempts at complex or passive structures are often faulty, as seen in phrases like 'barn replaced with holiday cottage was constructed below the road' and 'all trees are remained unchanged.' Punctuation and spacing errors, such as missing spaces after commas, are also present throughout the text, reflecting weak control over grammar and mechanics.
