Student answer (Band 7.0)
The maps illustrate how the layout of Beechwood Farm has changed from 1950 to the present day.
Overall, Beechwood Farm has undergone significant redevelopment, with several new facilities being constructed, existing amenities being expanded or replaced, and some features being relocated, while certain elements have remained unchanged.
Regarding new construction and modifications, a parking area, a camping field and solar panels have been added to the farm. A farm shop has been introduced in the area where the fruit shop was previously located. Holiday cottages have been built to replace the former barn, while the original track has been converted into a road. In addition, several facilities have been added to accommodate visitors and support the farm's development.
In terms of relocation and unchanged features, the barn has been relocated to the midpoint of the road. However, the soft-fruit area, vegetable fields, chicken area and farmhouse have remained unchanged throughout the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response satisfies all parts of the task by successfully summarizing the main changes and comparing the 1950 layout of Beechwood Farm with the current day. An effective overview is provided, noting both major redevelopments and elements that remained unchanged. Key features such as the addition of the camping field, solar panels, and holiday cottages are correctly identified and contrasted with the original structures. However, the response shows a few minor inaccuracies regarding positional details and spatial changes; for instance, the barn was not strictly relocated from the former barn site to the midpoint of the road in the way described, and certain features like the fruit shop mentioned do not accurately reflect the original 'fruit trees' label. To reach a higher band, the student would need to report visual data with greater precision and extend the discussion of specific spatial transformations without minor descriptive slips.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with a solid introduction, moving to an overview, and then separating the body into new constructions versus relocations and unchanged features. Cohesive devices such as 'Regarding new construction and modifications' and 'In terms of relocation and unchanged features' are used effectively to guide the reader through the comparison. However, referencing is occasionally slightly mechanical, and transitions could flow with even greater naturalness. To achieve the highest band levels, paragraphing and cohesive links would need to be entirely unobtrusive while maintaining flawless progression between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The writer uses a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision when describing map transformations. Less common lexical items and functional phrases such as 'undergone significant redevelopment', 'amenities being expanded or replaced', and 'accommodate visitors' demonstrate a commendable control of style. There are occasional slight inaccuracies in word choice, such as referring to the original 'fruit trees' area as a 'fruit shop', which slightly affects precision. Spelling and word formation are otherwise accurate throughout the response. To move to a higher band, the student should incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated, less common vocabulary items with entirely precise collocational use.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The writing exhibits a strong command of grammatical structures, successfully employing a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. There is good control over complex clauses, passive voice constructions (e.g., 'facilities being constructed', 'have been built'), and participial phrases. Punctuation is well-handled, and the majority of sentences are error-free. Minor slip-ups in prepositions or structural integration do not impede communication at all. To reach the highest tier, the student would need to display an even wider range of structures with consistent, flawless flexibility and rare minor slips across all sentence types.
