IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrate the site of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Overall, it is clear that beechwood farm has changed considerably with the introduction of tourism and eight new features that can be seen in the second diagram. The main development is that now visitors can go camping and stay in holiday cottages.

Looking at the plans in more detail, a farm shop is added next to fruit trees. Soft fruits and vegetables remained the same as before. The track has been changed to road and a barn is also added to the south east side. The other physical structures that have been added are holiday cottages, on the east side and a parking area to the opposite side of holiday cottages.

As well as buildings mentioned above, Sheep now have been separated into two sides, one side is for the first parking area and camping field, while the other side is for solar panels and the second parking area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main changes between 1950 and the present day at Beechwood Farm. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, mentioning the introduction of tourism and new structures. However, some areas are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the student states that the sheep area was separated into two sides for parking, camping, and solar panels, which misinterprets the spatial layout of the northern and eastern sections of the farm. While key features such as the farm shop, holiday cottages, and solar panels are identified, the overall selection of features lacks full clarity and precision in reporting spatial relationships, keeping the task response at the current level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific changes. Information is generally organized logically, moving from general observations to specific alterations. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader through the comparison, such as 'Looking at the plans in more detail' and 'As well as buildings mentioned above'. However, referencing and transitions occasionally feel mechanical, and paragraphing could be structured more effectively to group related changes together, such as agricultural transformations versus newly introduced tourist facilities.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully name various farm elements and new additions like 'holiday cottages', 'solar panels', and 'farm shop'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'considerable' and 'introduction of tourism', though some word choices and phrasing are slightly unnatural or repetitive. Spelling is generally accurate, and minor word choice inaccuracies do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the student should integrate more precise synonyms and demonstrate greater flexibility in lexical collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and prepositional phrases reasonably well (e.g., 'The plans illustrate the site of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and the same site today'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly concerning article usage (e.g., missing articles before singular countable nouns like 'farm shop' and 'road') and passive constructions (e.g., 'a farm shop is added' instead of 'has been added'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede overall communication, fitting the criteria for this band.
