IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrate the site of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Overall, it is clear that beechwood farm has changed considerably with the introduction of tourism and eight new features that can be seen in the second diagram. The main development is that now visitors can go camping and stay in holiday cottages.

Looking at the plans in more detail, a farm shop has been added next to fruit trees. Soft fruits and vegetables remained the same as before. The track has been changed to a road and a barn has also been added to the southeast side. The other physical structures that have been added are holiday cottages, on the east side and a parking area on the opposite side of holiday cottages.

As well as the buildings mentioned above, the large sheep field has been divided into two separate areas, one side used for first parking area and camping field and the other side for solar panels and the second parking area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and comparing them with the changes seen today. An overview is provided, highlighting the shift towards tourism and new facilities. However, some aspects are under-developed or inaccurately reported; for instance, the text claims that 'soft fruits and vegetables remained the same as before', whereas the visual data shows that the orchard and garden areas underwent clear reconfigurations, including the addition of a farm shop. Furthermore, the sheep field was not simply divided into two parking and camping zones, but also houses solar panels. These minor inaccuracies and generalizations keep the response at the current level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from an introductory overview to specific area-by-area details. Paragraphing is utilised adequately to separate the introduction, overall summary, and body details. However, cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical, and referencing between sentences is at times slightly disjointed, such as the sudden transition when discussing the physical structures in the third paragraph. While information is logically sequenced, smoother cohesive devices and more precise referencing of spatial locations would elevate the writing further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating changes using terms like 'introduction of tourism', 'holiday cottages', and 'solar panels'. The student makes attempts at less common vocabulary, though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'first parking area' and capitalizing 'beechwood farm' incorrectly. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, a wider and more precise range of lexical items relating to spatial change and transformation needs to be employed more consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures such as relative clauses and passive constructions like 'has been added'. There are some grammatical errors, particularly regarding article usage, such as missing an article before 'holiday cottages on the east side' and 'opposite side of holiday cottages'. However, these errors do not impede communication. Because it features a solid control of basic grammar with a good number of error-free sentences alongside some recurring minor slips, it meets the requirements of this band and shows partial control of more advanced features.
