Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by comparing the two maps of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and today. There is a clear overall attempt to highlight the main features, such as the persistence of the crop areas and the removal of the sheep zone. However, some aspects are under-developed or imprecise; for instance, the writer states that the barn was developed into a holiday cottage, whereas the map shows the holiday cottages occupying a new central area while the barn has been relocated to the south. The selection of features covers both continuities and major transformations, meeting the core requirements of Task 1, but minor misreadings prevent it from reaching a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division between the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific alterations. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct themes, such as the general comparison, additions, and structural shifts. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, relying on basic connectors like 'whereas', 'however', and 'moreover'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous use of pronouns and spatial references like 'a tree is there at present', which disrupts the smooth logical flow between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic comparisons through terms such as 'removed', 'introduced', 'wiped out', and 'shifted'. The student attempts less common vocabulary like 'transformations' or specific structural terms, but this is accompanied by noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'comparision' instead of 'comparison', 'vegitables' instead of 'vegetables', and 'sheeps' instead of the uncountable 'sheep'. While these lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score by demonstrating limited precision and control over word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and prepositional phrases. Grammatical control is mixed, featuring some error-free sentences alongside frequent minor lapses, such as missing articles ('near the fruit trees', 'in north-east corner'), incorrect prepositions ('in its south' instead of 'to its south'), and awkward passive constructions ('costructed' and missing auxiliary verbs in 'is introduced'). Punctuation is basic, with run-on tendencies in complex compound sentences. These errors occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing, though they rarely obscure the intended meaning.
