Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response satisfies the requirements for the given band by addressing all parts of the task and presenting a clear overview of the main developments, such as the replacement of tracks by roads and the introduction of a camping field and solar panels. Key features are selected and reported, like the unchanged status of the soft fruits and vegetables areas. However, some aspects of the task are under-developed or lack full clarity, which prevents the score from rising higher. For instance, the description of the new facilities in the north-eastern and north-western sections could have been extended by providing more precise spatial relations and comparative details regarding the original layout. To achieve a higher band, the overview should capture broader structural shifts more cohesively, and every highlighted change should be fully elaborated with precise comparative data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory summary to specific regional details. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with the north-western and north-eastern zones before transitioning to the south-eastern area. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'Starting with the north-western area' and 'Moving to the South-eastern area'. Nevertheless, cohesion occasionally feels somewhat mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally slightly imprecise, such as in the use of article constraints ('a parking' instead of 'a parking area'). To progress to the next level, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing within and between sentences is entirely seamless and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to the map features, such as 'demolished', 'transformed', and 'relocated'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that restrict the score, including 'repalced' instead of 'replaced', 'remined' instead of 'remained', and awkward phrasing like 'sheep pen' instead of 'sheep area' or 'pasture'. Furthermore, countable and uncountable noun confusions occur, such as writing 'a parking as well as farm shop' instead of 'a parking area and a farm shop'. To reach a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire with precise collocations, eliminate spelling errors, and exercise greater control over word choices and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting passive constructions appropriately for map descriptions, such as 'tracks being replaced by roads' and 'holiday cottages were constructed'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('a parking as well as farm shop', 'between road and solar panels'), minor punctuation issues ('on it's place' instead of 'in its place'), and occasional awkward preposition usage. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede overall communication. To attain a higher band, the writer should increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate meticulous control over article usage, subject-verb agreement, and possessive determiners.
