IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The map illustrates the changes that took place in Beechwood Farm between 1950 and the present day.
Overall, the area became more developed, with the major additions of a camping field and solar panels. Meanwhile, the parking area was expanded, and the barn was replaced by a holiday cottage. Several other changes were also made, while most of the trees remained unchanged.
In 1950, sheep were kept in the area above the track. By the present day, this area had been replaced by a camping field, solar panels and an enlarged parking area. In addition, the original barn below the road was replaced by a holiday cottage. Another barn was constructed at the curve of the road.
The track was converted into a road, although its route was not extended. The trees remained largely unchanged. However, a new farm shop was constructed among the fruit trees. Overall, Beechwood Farm underwent considerable development, making it more suitable for tourists.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear overview of the main changes depicted in the maps of Beechwood Farm between 1950 and today. Key features such as the conversion of the sheep area into a camping field, solar panels, and parking spaces are correctly identified and contrasted with the original layout. The report includes appropriate comparisons, such as noting that the track became a road and that the trees remained largely unchanged. While the development of ideas is generally clear and supported by visual evidence, a few minor spatial details could have been integrated more seamlessly to reach the highest level of comprehensive coverage. Overall, the information is well-selected and effectively summarised.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is suitably divided into paragraphs, starting with an introductory statement, followed by a concise overview paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs outlining specific transformations. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', 'In addition', and 'However', which help guide the reader through the comparison. However, the connection between sentences occasionally feels slightly mechanical rather than fully integrated, which prevents the essay from achieving complete cohesion and seamless flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate general trends from specific architectural and land-use alterations.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with adequate flexibility and precision to describe spatial changes. Less common lexical items and functional phrases are attempted appropriately, such as 'transformed', 'converted', 'remained largely unchanged', and 'considerable development'. Word choice and collocations are generally accurate, allowing the message to be communicated clearly. There are minor limitations in the variety of vocabulary used for reporting spatial transformations, but the lexical control is solid overall, with appropriate deployment of terms relevant to geographical and structural changes over time.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The writing exhibits a good variety of complex structures and demonstrates solid grammatical control. The student successfully employs passive voice and varied tense forms—such as past simple ('were kept', 'was constructed') and present perfect/past perfect contexts ('had been replaced')—to accurately contrast the two time periods. Frequent error-free sentences are evident, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. While minor awkwardness appears in sentence packaging, the grammar and sentence structures rarely impede communication and show a high level of accuracy and range.
