Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear overview and reporting the main features of Beechwood farm between 1950 and today. The overview outlines the shift from traditional farming to a commercial and recreational site. Key comparisons are made, such as the conversion of tracks into roads, the addition of a farm shop and holiday cottages, and the redevelopment of the sheep area into a camping field and solar panels. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed; for instance, the sentence detailing the installation of solar panels trails off incomplete at the end of the first paragraph. To reach the next level, every sentence needs full development without abrupt cut-offs, ensuring all major spatial transformations are described with complete precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical paragraph structure, moving from an introductory overview to specific spatial changes across the site. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related developments, such as the southern crop areas and the northern sheep field transformations. Cohesive devices are generally deployed to guide the reader, although referencing and linking are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, as seen in the frequent use of 'the farm' or 'the area'. Progression is maintained throughout, but smoother transitional phrases between paragraphs would enhance the flow and elevate the cohesion to a higher standard.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying information about agricultural and commercial features such as 'commercial', 'holiday cottages', 'solar panels', and 'vegetables area'. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'redeveloped' or 'transformation'. However, there are some minor word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as the phrasing 'There has been no changes' (where plural agreement is required) and 'major change' instead of 'changes'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary choices do not impede communication, though a wider variety of precise lexical items and tighter collocation control would be needed for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative statements. There is good control over basic sentence construction, but several grammatical errors persist. For instance, there is a subject-verb agreement error ('There has been no changes') and missing articles or prepositions in phrases like 'farm shop is added in the fruit trees area'. Furthermore, the final sentence of the first paragraph is grammatically incomplete. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, the frequency of structural slips and punctuation lapses keeps the grammatical score at this level.
