Student answer (Band 6.5)

The maps illustrate the changes Beechwood farm went through from 1950 and today.

Overall, the left side of the track remained the same with very minor changes since 1950, while the grazing land on the right of the tracks which was only for maintaining sheep flock, now turned into camping field and solar panels.

In 1950, the farm was divided into 2 parts by a long track with majorly agricultural plantations for growing fruit trees, soft fruits and other several vegetables to the left. To the end of the farm where the river curves, a poultry farm existed maintaining chickens along with a barn house. Entire land to the right of the tracks was left for herding flocks of sheep.

However, Today the track was reconstructed into a road, while the majority of the farm land to the left did not go through much changes with only a new farm shop established in the fruit trees and the barn relocated to the end of the road junction. The old barn site was redeveloped into holiday cottages. Half of the space in the right side of the farm established as a camping field while other half was completely covered by solar panels with parking spots at the both far ends of the road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of Beechwood Farm between 1950 and today. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the major transformations on the eastern side while noting the stability of the western side. Key features such as the addition of the camping field, solar panels, and holiday cottages are properly compared against the original layout. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed; for instance, minor layout details like the new parking spaces and the relocated barn could be integrated more smoothly into the overarching narrative, reflecting a solid Band 6 performance with some characteristics of the next level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introduction and overview to detailed body paragraphs comparing the past and present layouts. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct spatial areas and time periods. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'In 1950', and 'However, Today', though referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical or repetitive in sentence openings. Transitional phrases are generally effective, guiding the reader through the spatial changes from left to right, earning a solid Band 6 with glimpses of clearer logical progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully describe agricultural and recreational features such as 'agricultural plantations', 'poultry farm', 'camping field', and 'solar panels'. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, though minor word choice and collocation inaccuracies occur, such as writing 'farm land' instead of 'farmland' and 'barn house' instead of simply 'barn'. Spelling and word-formation errors do not impede communication, placing this criterion comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor while showing a sufficient range of functional terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures effectively, such as 'the grazing land on the right of the tracks which was only for maintaining sheep flock'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward preposition usages, such as 'changes from 1950 and today' (instead of 'between 1950 and today') and missing articles in phrases like 'to camping field and solar panels'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, reflecting the typical balance of mixed structures and controlled accuracy found at Band 6.
