IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The plans illustrate how a farm site has changed from 1950 to the present day.

Overall, the farm has undergone significant development. Several agricultural features, such as the orchards and animal areas, have been removed or relocated, while new facilities, including a car park, a café and a children’s play area, have been introduced. However, the farmhouse and the main road have remained in place.

In 1950, the farmhouse was situated in the northern part of the site, with a garden directly to its south. To the east of the farmhouse, there was a large orchard, while a second orchard was located in the south-western corner. A road ran from the west to the east through the middle of the farm. There were also animal sheds and a cow shed in the southern part of the site.

Today, the farmhouse remains in the same location, although the garden has been replaced by a car park. The former orchard to the east has been converted into a café and a children’s play area, while the other orchard has been replaced by a large area for parking. The animal sheds have also disappeared, and a new shop has been constructed in the southern part of the site. In addition, some trees and a pond have been added near the western side of the farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response presents a clear overview of the changes, but it suffers from significant inaccuracies when compared against the visual data provided. The student hallucinates features not present in the diagrams, such as a 'cafe', 'children's play area', and a 'pond', while misreporting existing features like the layout of the orchards and animal areas. Although the general shift from agriculture to commercial and recreational use is acknowledged, the misrepresentation of specific map data means the task is only partially addressed. To improve and reach higher bands, the writer must ensure all reported information is strictly grounded in the provided visuals rather than introducing outside assumptions or incorrect details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The response demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, beginning with an introduction and overview, followed by specific details of the past layout, and concluding with the current state. Paragraphing is used effectively, with each paragraph serving a distinct function. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 1950', and 'Today' are employed flexibly to guide the reader smoothly through the temporal comparison, and referencing is handled accurately. To move even higher, paragraph transitions could incorporate more sophisticated cohesive links to create an entirely seamless flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully employing less common items and functional phrases such as 'undergone significant development', 'converted into', and 'relocated'. Word choice is generally appropriate for describing spatial changes, although inaccuracies occur when misinterpreting specific features on the map. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout, and the vocabulary allows the message to be communicated clearly. To achieve a higher band, the writer should integrate more sophisticated, precise lexical collocations related to geographical transformations and ensure absolute accuracy in matching vocabulary to visual data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

The response exhibits an impressive control of grammar, utilizing a wide range of complex sentence structures with a high degree of flexibility. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, featuring accurate use of passive voice ('have been removed', 'has been constructed'), complex temporal clauses ('how a farm site has changed'), and correct prepositional phrases. Punctuation is handled with precision, and verb tenses shift appropriately between the past simple ('was situated', 'ran') and the present simple ('remains', 'is') to reflect the two time periods. This represents a very strong command of grammatical forms.
