IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The maps compare the changes that took place at beechwood farm between 1950 and present.
Overall, the farm has developed from a mainly agricultural area into a site offering both tourism and recreational facilities. Several original features have remained, while new tourists amenities have been introduced.
In 1950, the north-west side contained fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables, whereas a farmhouse, barn and chickens were located in the south-east corner, and tracks connected different section of the farm. On the northern part of the farm was a large area for sheep.
At present, the sheep-grazing area has been replaced by a camping field and solar panels. The tracks have been converted into roads, and a farm shop has been built near the fruit trees. Holiday cottages and additional parking facilities have also been introduced and Barn has been relocated to southern part of the farm. However, fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, farmhouse, and chicken remain same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear summary of the main features and making relevant comparisons between the 1950 plan and the present-day layout of Beechwood Farm. An appropriate overview is included right at the beginning, noting the shift from a strictly agricultural site to one featuring tourism and recreation. Key spatial transformations are reported accurately, such as the replacement of the sheep area with a camping field and solar panels, and the addition of holiday cottages and a farm shop. While most major details are covered well, a few minor inaccuracies occur, such as stating that the barn has been relocated when the maps show a different configuration, reflecting a tendency to occasionally generalise or misread minor details. Overall, the content is well-supported and meets the requirements of a solid performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The text demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into paragraphs, moving from an introductory statement and an overall summary to a detailed description of the past layout, and finally contrasting it with the present-day modifications. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 1950', 'whereas', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader through the comparison. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct time periods and themes. Although cohesion is managed well, slightly more varied transitional phrases could elevate the structure further.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision when describing map changes. Less common items and task-specific vocabulary are attempted with reasonable success, such as 'recreational facilities', 'agricultural area', and 'sheep-grazing area'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and formatting slips, such as the failure to capitalise proper nouns ('beechwood farm') and minor word-choice lapses like 'tourists amenities' instead of 'tourist amenities'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication, demonstrating a solid foundation with room for more precise word choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The writing exhibits a good variety of complex structures alongside simpler sentence forms, resulting in frequent error-free sentences. Good control of grammar is evident in sentences like 'The maps compare the changes that took place at beechwood farm between 1950 and present' and 'the farm has developed from a mainly agricultural area into a site offering both tourism and recreational facilities.' Minor errors persist, such as the omission of an article in 'between 1950 and the present' and a missing article before 'Barn has been relocated', but these errors do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally accurate, and control over verb tenses (past simple for 1950 and present perfect for changes) is well maintained.
