Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by attempting to outline the main changes between 1950 and today at Beechwood Farm, such as the introduction of the farm shop, camping field, and holiday cottages. However, some aspects of the task are handled more successfully than others. The overview paragraph is somewhat fragmented and lacks a clear summary of the most significant overarching transformations. Furthermore, certain details are slightly imprecise or under-developed, such as the vague reporting of how the road and barn locations shifted. While the main features are touched upon, providing a more cohesive and fully developed summary of the specific land-use conversions would elevate this aspect of the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible introduction, a body paragraph describing the past, and a final paragraph detailing current changes. Paragraphing is attempted, though grouping ideas could be managed more logically. Cohesive devices are used to link sentences, but referencing and transitions are at times mechanical or slightly awkward, such as starting sentences with abrupt phrasing like 'Overall It can be seen' or 'Conversely, today site'. Pronoun referencing and logical progression require smoother handling to ensure information flows naturally from one point to the next without causing minor disruptions for the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating basic ideas about the farm's layout and modifications. The writer attempts some less common and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'upgradation', 'conventional', and 'environmental concern', but these attempts are accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice, form, and collocation. There are noticeable lexical slips, such as 'upgradation' instead of 'upgrade' or 'modernisation', 'today site' instead of 'the site today', and spelling or spacing issues like 'facilties' and 'parkings'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the precision and flexibility needed for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors regarding prepositions, articles, and word forms, such as 'from the period 1950 till today', 'chicken was located' (plural/singular agreement), 'at multiple position' (pluralisation), and 'reduce' instead of 'reduced'. Punctuation errors, such as irregular spacing before commas and periods, are also present. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, the frequency of structural slips and lack of consistent error-free complex sentences keep this criterion at the current level.
