Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task partially by attempting to describe the changes between 1950 and the present at Beechwood Farm. While the main features are touched upon, such as the addition of the farm shop, holiday cottages, and the transformation of the sheep area, the information is somewhat limited and parts of the data are under-developed or imprecise. For example, stating that 'the sheep was totally refurnished with solar panels' misinterprets the spatial layout, as the sheep grazing area was replaced entirely by new facilities. Additionally, the overview lacks precision and clarity regarding the overall spatial transformation. To reach a higher level, the response needs to provide a fully developed comparison with clearer referencing of locations and a more robust summary of the overall trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation in the essay, with an introductory statement, body paragraphs addressing different sections of the maps, and a concluding discussion of the northern area. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing sentence connections, such as 'Furthermore, holiday cottages and farm shop were added new one in rest of the area.' Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak and repetitive, relying heavily on basic linkers like 'Moreover' and 'However'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to track locations accurately. To improve cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of accurate cohesive devices and ensure that ideas are linked logically to guide the reader smoothly through the spatial comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. There are instances of inaccurate word choice and non-standard collocations, such as 'protion' instead of portion, 'refurnished' instead of replaced or converted, and 'filed' instead of field. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to the maps, but these attempts are marred by spelling and word-form errors, like 'tress' for trees and 'parkings' for parking spaces. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical range with more precise geographical and descriptive terminology, while exercising greater accuracy in spelling and word choice to ensure smooth communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical structures used are limited and frequently faulty, featuring a mix of simple sentences and attempts at complex forms that contain noticeable errors. There are frequent issues with prepositions, articles, and verb tenses, such as 'In plan illustrates about...' where the introductory clause is ungrammatical, and 'the major changes was done' where subject-verb agreement is incorrect. Other errors include missing articles ('in present plan') and awkward phrasing in relative clauses. These frequent errors cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To improve, the writer must focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring proper subject-verb agreement, accurate use of prepositions for spatial description, and a greater variety of error-free complex sentences.
