Student answer (Band 7.5)

The plans below show how Beechwood Farm has changed since 1950s. Overall, Beechwood Farm has become more developed and tourist-oriented, with some new hospitality facilities added, while some exisiting ones are removed.

In 1950, the Beechwood Farm had a large area reserved for keeping sheep in the north-west and agricultural land for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables opposite to it, separated by the track running across the whole farm. In the south of the farm was a barn right next to the track along with a farmhouse and a chicken coop near the river.

By the present day, the area previously used for keeping sheep had been converted into a camping field, with a parking area right next to the main road, while the remaining area was converted into a solar panel site. The agricultural land remained mostly untouched, with only a new farm shop opened next to the fruit trees. The track was converted into a road, while the original barn was converted into holiday cottages. The farmhouse and chicken coop remained unchanged, while a small barn was built at the road junction.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response covers all key features of the two plans, providing a clear and accurate comparison between Beechwood Farm in 1950 and today. The overview successfully captures the main trends, noting that the farm has become more developed and tourist-oriented. Specific details, such as the conversion of the sheep area into a camping field and solar panels, and the addition of the farm shop, are clearly reported. The response is fully developed and well-grounded in the provided visual data, satisfying the requirements for this high band level without any major omissions or irrelevancies.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The writing demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is suitably divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and overview, followed by a detailed description of the 1950 layout, and concluding with present-day changes. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately, such as 'In 1950', 'By the present day', and 'while the remaining area', which help guide the reader smoothly through the spatial and temporal comparisons. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different eras of the farm's evolution.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

The vocabulary used is sufficient for the task and demonstrates some flexibility and precision. The student successfully incorporates less common and topic-specific vocabulary items such as 'tourist-oriented', 'converted into', 'agricultural land', and 'solar panel site'. There is a good awareness of collocation and style appropriate for an academic report. Minor slips, such as the minor spelling typo 'exisiting' in the introduction, do not impede communication, and the choice of descriptive verbs adds accuracy to the transformations described.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response exhibits a good variety of complex sentence structures alongside simple forms. There is evidence of good control over grammar and punctuation, with frequent error-free sentences utilizing passive voice effectively, as seen in 'had been converted into a camping field' and 'was built at the road junction'. While a few minor errors persist, such as the unnecessary pluralisation in 'since 1950s' and the article slip in 'the Beechwood Farm', these errors do not impede communication and the overall grammatical control remains strong.
