Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given map illutsrates, the developmen of Beechwood Farm from 1950 to 2026. The map tells us about the major differences during this period. A glace at the diagram shows that the Beechwood Farm hasecome more advanced with an addition of parking, solar panel, farm shop, parking and holiday cottages, and removal of sheep. The only the river does not change.

In 1950, there was a track located alongside with fruit trees and soft fruit and the sheep was located top right corner. In 2026 the sheep was removed with the addition of parking, Camping field and Solar panel were installed. The track was converted into road and Farm shop also added.

At the bottom left of the map the Barn recolates in 2026. An interesting develepment is holiday cottages but the farm remain at its same place where it was in 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response only partially addresses the task requirements. It fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, as the text contains only 143 words. While the writer attempts to summarise the main changes between 1950 and today, the overview is overly simplistic, stating that only the river did not change while missing other persistent features like the farmhouse and chickens. Several details are inaccurate or confusing, such as claiming the barn 'recolates' at the bottom left when it appears elsewhere, and the time frame is misstated as 2026 rather than today. To reach a higher band, the response must meet the word count, present a fully accurate and clear overview, and avoid confusing positional details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation with paragraphing, but overall progression is lacking. The connection of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. For instance, sentences like 'A glace at the diagram shows that...' and 'At the bottom left of the map the Barn recolates in 2026' lack smooth logical links to the surrounding details. Paragraph boundaries are attempted, but the grouping of information is disjointed. To improve, the writer needs to ensure ideas flow logically from one sentence to the next, use cohesive devices more accurately, and structure paragraphs around clear thematic points such as northern additions versus central modifications.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'illutsrates', 'developmen', 'hasecome', 'glace', and 'recolates'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'advanced' and 'addition', but imprecise collocations and frequent spelling mistakes impede communication in places. To achieve a higher band score, the student needs to use a wider range of precise lexical items related to maps and spatial changes, such as 'demolished', 'converted', 'relocated', or 'expansion', while significantly improving spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent grammatical errors. There are issues with article usage, prepositions, and verb tenses, such as 'the sheep was located top right corner', 'the farm remain at its same place', and mixing past and future timeframes by referring to today as 2026. Attempts at complex or passive structures are frequently faulty. To reach the next band, the student must increase sentence variety, improve control over tense consistency when describing past and present map data, and eliminate basic errors in prepositions and agreement.
