Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response makes an attempt to summarise the changes shown in the two maps, identifying several key alterations such as the addition of the solar panels, farm shop, parking areas, camping field, and holiday cottages, alongside the removal of the sheep. However, the information is presented with notable inaccuracies and confusion regarding spatial relationships and features. For instance, the text claims that 'in 1960' there were only fruit trees, misinterpreting the 1950 date, and provides confusing descriptions of how elements like the barn and track were restructured. While an overview is attempted in the introduction, the overall development of ideas is limited and lacks precise reporting of the main features, placing the response at this band level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some basic organisation, opening with an introductory statement and attempting to separate details into body sentences. However, there is no clear overall progression or logical structure guiding the reader through the spatial comparison of the two maps. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes awkwardly, such as 'On the other side', and referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow which map or specific area is being discussed. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, with multiple distinct ideas crammed together without adequate separation, resulting in a disjointed flow of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, adequate only for basic communication about the maps. There are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the text, such as 'devlopment', 'solar penal', 'parkng', 'holidy', 'fuit', and 'pennels'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items related to the visual data, but these attempts are marred by inaccurate spelling and inappropriate collocations that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and obscure the precise meaning of the intended features.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text relies on a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors involving missing articles, incorrect verb tenses, awkward prepositions, and poor subject-verb agreement, such as 'the Beech farm become more advanced', 'sheep in the top right corner which removed', and 'soft fruits and vegetables do not changed their position'. Punctuation is also weak, with missing periods and run-on sentences that require the reader to work harder to decipher the intended meaning. These frequent errors restrict the clarity of the writing.
