Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying and reporting the main features and changes between the 1950 map and the current plan of Beechwood Farm. It provides a clear overview stating that the farm has undergone substantial changes with new facilities introduced while old ones were removed or relocated. Key transformations, such as the sheep area being replaced by a camping field and solar panels, and the barn being converted into holiday cottages, are well reported. However, some details are slightly inaccurate or under-developed, such as stating the barn has been converted into holiday cottages when the map shows holiday cottages are newly built nearby and the barn remains at the south, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory overview to specific sections of the map. Information is divided into logical paragraphs focusing on the southern section and the remaining features. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the comparisons, such as 'Looking first at the southern section', 'Whereas', and 'In contrast'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical, and some transitions are slightly abrupt, which places this aspect firmly in the mid-range. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the descriptions effectively.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'substanial', 'redevelopments', 'in close proximity', and 'transformed'. However, there are notable spelling errors, such as 'substanial' instead of 'substantial', and minor inaccuracies in word form or collocation, such as 'chicken farm' instead of 'chickens area' or enclosure. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect typical limitations of the mid-range where lexical control lacks precision and consistency when attempting more sophisticated terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as relative clauses and transitional prepositional phrases. There are several grammatical errors and lapses in accuracy, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'the farm undergone', pluralization errors such as 'tracks has been transformed' and 'solar panels has been added', and omission or misuse of articles, such as 'barn has been converted' and 'vegetable, soft fruit and fruit trees areas remain same'. Punctuation and capitalization errors also occur, such as lowercase 'beechwood farm'. These errors represent typical constraints of the mid-range.
