IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two plans illustrate development in the Beechwood Farm, comparing its original plan from 1950 to present day.
Overall, the Beechwood farm went through substantial change between 1950 and present day. Most notably, the sheep area was transformed into a camping site, new solar panels were installed, and roads were constructed in the farm.
In the north of the farm, the sheep area was replaced by a camping field; right beside it, a park is also developed. In the center the old tracks were removed, and in their place a road was constructed. In the northeastern corner of the farm, new solar panels are installed with an area of parking in the vicinity.
Just near the road, Old Barm was demolished, and three holiday cottages were constructed while the new Barm was moved towards the south of the map near the river. In contrast, farmhouses, chickens, vegetables, and soft fruits remained unchanged since 1950; however, a farm shop is constructed near fruit trees by the road

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and highlighting key changes between the 1950 farm plan and the present layout. Major features such as the conversion of the sheep area into a camping field, the addition of solar panels, and the expansion of the road network are properly reported. The overall progression is clear, meeting the requirements comfortably. However, some minor details are slightly glossed over or generalised, such as the exact positioning of the new buildings, placing this response at the solid level achieved where main features are covered well while a few supporting details remain slightly less developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from introduction to overview, followed by specific spatial descriptions of the north, center, and northeast. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the information. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'In the north of the farm', 'In the center', and 'In contrast', which help guide the reader through the comparisons. However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical or formulaic, and referencing could be smoother in places, which prevents the writing from reaching higher levels of seamless flow and natural connectivity.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing map changes, including terms like 'substantial change', 'transformed', 'demolished', and 'constructed'. There are some successful attempts at less common vocabulary, though occasional word-choice and spelling slips occur, such as writing 'Barm' instead of 'Barn' and phrasing like 'a park is also developed' rather than 'a parking area was established'. These lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the descriptions easily, though more precise collocation and spelling accuracy would be needed for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent command of structure with attempts at passive voice and comparative phrasing (e.g., 'the sheep area was replaced by a camping field'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('in farm', 'near fruit trees') and occasional tense inconsistencies, but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences are accurate. This showcases the typical profile where simple structures are handled well alongside developing control over complex sentences, with a few persistent errors.
