IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps show the changes that Beechwood Farm has undergone since 1950.
Overall, the most notable change is in the north-eastern region with the addition of camping fields and solar panels. Most places in the site have remained same, However, the barn has been re-located to a smaller place.
On the North-eastern side, we have two to three new additions. These include solar panels, camping field and a designated area for parking. Originally in the 1950's this area belonged to the goats. The tracks have been converted into roads now. The location of chickens and farmhouse is still the same, However, the barn has been shfted to a smaller place. New holiday cottages have been built where once stood the barn.
On the southern side, we see an addition of a new farm shop. Similarly,on the north western side, a new parking space has been built. Whereas, in 1950 this area was not being used for anything worthwhile.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between the 1950 map and today. The overview successfully highlights key transformations, such as the additions in the north-eastern region and changes to the barn. However, some ideas are under-developed or contain factual inaccuracies based on the provided maps. For instance, the text claims that the north-eastern area originally belonged to goats, which is not supported by the map data (which indicates 'Sheep'), and states that new holiday cottages were built where the barn once stood, whereas the barn was actually relocated elsewhere. To reach a higher band, the response needs to present a more accurate and fully supported selection of data without misinterpreting visual details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The report maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing different areas of the farm. Information is generally organized logically, moving from the north-eastern side to the southern and north-western sections. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the use of transition words and punctuation shows errors, such as comma splices ('Most places in the site have remained same, However, the barn has been re-located...'). Furthermore, referencing and paragraph transitions can feel slightly disjointed. To improve, the writer should ensure smoother logical progression and more accurate mechanical linking between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary related to map transformations, such as 're-located', 'designated area', and 'additions'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 're-located' with an unnecessary hyphen, 'shfted' (shifted), and minor inaccuracies in phrasing like 'remained same' instead of 'remained the same'. There are also occasional lexical inaccuracies, such as misidentifying animals or features. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on precise vocabulary selection, accurate spelling, and careful proofreading of common descriptive collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There is control over basic verb tenses suitable for describing changes over time, such as 'have undergone' and 'have been built'. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('in 1950' instead of 'in the 1950s' in places, or missing 'the' before 'site'), incorrect punctuation with transitional markers ('However,' used mid-sentence after a comma), and preposition choices. While these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear, the presence of these recurring structural and punctuation slips keeps the grammar score at this level. Increasing the proportion of error-free complex sentences will elevate this score.
