Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response makes an attempt to compare the two maps of Beechwood Farm, noting key alterations such as the conversion of the track to a road, the addition of a camping field, and the installation of solar panels. However, the response falls short of fully satisfying the task requirements because it misses several major visible features, such as the new farm shop, holiday cottages, and multiple parking areas. Furthermore, the overview lacks precision, and the description features inaccuracies regarding spatial arrangements, such as stating that 'sheep farm was establish in the opposite of fruit trees'. Ideas are limited and under-developed, keeping the response at a restricted level for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs detailing past and present features, and concluding with a summary statement. There is a basic overall progression, and the writer uses transitional signals like 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' to link thoughts together. However, referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical use of cohesive devices prevents a smoother flow of information. Paragraphing is attempted appropriately, providing a readable framework, yet the logical connections between individual sentences occasionally falter, characteristic of a mid-level performance.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic description of the maps, incorporating terms like 'transformations', 'camping field', and 'solar panels'. However, the range is limited, and there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors that hinder precision, such as 'vegetable trees' instead of vegetable plots, and 'parking stand' instead of parking area. Additionally, spelling and word formation errors appear, such as 'establish' instead of established and 'Additionaly' with a single 'l'. These lexical inaccuracies do not totally obscure meaning, but they restrict the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses in 'what Beechwood Farm looked like'. However, the grammatical range is limited, and frequent errors persist throughout the text. There are issues with verb forms and tenses, such as 'a lot of changes took place' combined with present tense shifts, passive voice failures like 'sheep farm has divided' instead of has been divided, and subject-verb agreement errors like 'some major changes has done'. Punctuation and article usage also show inconsistencies, causing occasional difficulty for the reader.
