IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pictures illustrate the comparison between the map of a farm field from 1950 known as Beechwood farm and the same site today.

Some modifications have been made to the farm over time. Amenities like Parking, farm shops, holiday cottages have been introduced today. Moreover, solar panels have been installed for energy efficiency.

Previously a track divided the farm into two parts which is now paved into a road. On its top was a field for sheep grazing in 1950. This now comprises 2 parkings, one next to the main road and the other in the opposite corner. Some part of this field is now used for camping and the remaining part now has solar panels.

On the other side of this new road fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables are in the same place as previously. However, farm trees now have a farm shop nearby. The barn is relocated to where roads meet, chickens and farmhouse are still where they used to be in 1950. At the old place of Barn are now holiday cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making clear comparisons between the 1950 map and the present-day layout of Beechwood Farm. You present an overview of the changes, such as the introduction of commercial and leisure facilities like parking areas, a farm shop, and holiday cottages. However, some areas could be extended further or described with greater precision. For instance, the exact positioning of the new road compared to the old track is slightly unclear, and some minor details of the layout are under-developed. To reach a higher level, you should ensure every major transformation is fully supported with specific spatial relationships and a more comprehensive overview of the spatial redistribution.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory summary to specific paragraph-by-paragraph contrasts. You use paragraphing appropriately to separate different zones of the farm, such as the northern sheep field transformation and the western agricultural plots. Cohesive devices are employed, including phrases like 'Moreover', 'Previously', and 'However'. However, some cohesive links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and referencing can occasionally be improved to clarify spatial relationships, such as how you transition between the old track and the new road. To achieve a higher score, ensure smoother logical transitions and more sophisticated referencing throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms relevant to map analysis, such as 'modifications', 'relocated', and 'energy efficiency'. You attempt less common vocabulary items like 'amenities' and 'comprises'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'farm trees now have a farm shop nearby' instead of referring to the fruit trees or the farm generally, and minor phrasing awkwardness like 'On its top'. Spelling and word-form errors are minimal and do not impede communication. To push into higher bands, aim to use more precise domain-specific terminology and collocations related to geographical changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as relative clauses and passive constructions, as seen in 'solar panels have been installed' and 'a track divided the farm into two parts which is now paved into a road'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing commas in lists ('Amenities like Parking, farm shops, holiday cottages') and minor preposition or article slips. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate. To reach the next level, increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and refine your punctuation control.
