IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram compares the changes undergone to the Beechwood farm.
Overall, the farm has undergone considerable amount of adaptations, with the major addition of camping field, roads, barn, solar panels, a parking area, and cottages for holiday. Whereas, the plantation site, river, and farmhouse remained steady.
Looking into the detailed information, it can be seen that in 1950, there was a track alongside fruit and vegetable trees, connecting it to the Barn. However, today, those tracks are being transformed into modern roads, with the addition of a farm shop and a parking area on the left and right side of the road. Moreover, the place earlier used for sheep grazing has now been utilized for camping. In addition, solar panels has also been installed along the camp field.
Furthermore, the place used for Barn has been modified to a new parking area and holiday cottage respectively. Whereas, the barn has been shifted to the south corner of the road. On the contrary, the farmhouse where chickens were kept remained the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by comparing the two maps of Beechwood farm, noting key transformations such as the addition of the camping field, holiday cottages, and the farm shop. An overview is present, highlighting the overall scale of adaptations alongside features that remained unchanged. However, certain aspects are slightly under-developed or imprecise; for instance, the description of the barn and parking relocation is a bit confusing, as the text states the former barn location became a parking area and holiday cottage, but the barn itself was shifted. The response sits comfortably at this level because it covers all necessary data points and provides clear comparisons, though a more fully extended exploration of spatial changes would push it higher.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction, an overview, and detailed body paragraphs that logically guide the reader through the spatial changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the farm. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Looking into the detailed information', 'However', and 'Moreover' are employed to sequence information, though referencing and linking occasionally feel slightly mechanical or formulaic. For example, transitional phrases like 'On the contrary' are used where a simple contrast would be more natural. Progression is generally clear throughout the text, meeting all the requirements of this band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'adaptations', 'plantation site', 'transformed', and 'utilised'. There are, however, some noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'changes undergone to' instead of 'changes to', 'fruit and vegetable trees' instead of orchards/plots, and 'camp field' instead of camping field. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary attempts, while sometimes slightly unnatural, do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to employ less common lexical items with greater precision and stylistic flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more intricate constructions such as participle clauses and passive voice ('have now been utilized', 'are being transformed'). There are several grammatical errors present, such as article omissions ('camping field', 'farm shop'), incorrect prepositions ('on the left and right side' instead of 'sides'), and minor subject-verb agreement or tense inconsistencies ('solar panels has also been installed'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the descriptions easily. Good control over punctuation is also maintained throughout.
