Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task, providing a comprehensive overview and covering the main changes between 1950 and today. The key features of the Beechwood Farm are reported, such as the replacement of the sheep area with a camping field and solar panels, and the retention of crops like fruit trees and vegetables. However, some areas of the response are slightly underdeveloped or contain inaccurate descriptions of locations, such as stating the barn was relocated to the road junction when it was actually moved to the southern end. This positions the response comfortably within the mid-level achievement bracket, demonstrating an adequate grasp of the visual data while missing a higher level of precision and fully extended comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, overview, and specific spatial details of the upper and lower sections. Information is generally sequenced logically, and the progression of changes from past to present is understandable. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, with awkward transitional phrases like 'Whereas' and 'Similaraly' used inappropriately to link clauses and sentences. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as pronoun usage and dangling connectors. While paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, the cohesive devices require greater flexibility and accuracy to achieve a higher standard.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to the map features, such as 'diversifed', 'renewable energy', and 'demolished'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the overall quality, including 'beechwood farm iin', 'agricultur land', 'diversifed', 'tress', and 'hoilday cottages'. Furthermore, collocation and lexical control are sometimes weak, as seen in phrases like 'simple agriculture land' instead of 'agricultural land'. These inaccuracies do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score due to frequent slips in spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures and passive voice, such as 'The site has undergone significant changes' and 'The track was replaced by the modernised road.' However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Issues include tense inconsistencies and awkward passive constructions like 'how it was look at present', 'the site was completly demolished, and replaced', and 'two new parking amenitieswere occured'. Additionally, article omission and agreement errors, such as 'on south east side' and 'feature are still in there postion', are evident. While these errors rarely completely obscure the meaning, they are frequent enough to prevent the grammar score from rising.
