Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate the differences between Beechwood farm in 1950 and its developments today.

Overall, there have been a lot of changes in the farm throughout the period. Beechwood farn has been transformed from a fully agriculture site into a multifunctional farm featuring farming, tourism and renewable energy facilities.

Firstly, the most noticeable change has happened in the largest area of sheep farming. In 1950, the majority of the farm was used for animal husbandry, sheep in particular, but first place now is divided into half of completely different purpose. To be specific., the first house located in the Northeast constructed into an area cover with solar panels, while the other becomes a camping field, which looks right at the main road. Besides, there are two parking lots in each of the locations.

Secondly, there were also some small developments on the opposite side of the road. Whereas most things have been kept originally, such as area of root tree and vegetables, there is farm shop has been built nearby the main road later. In the centre, there is a two turn road which looks similar to a triangle in the map, a small barn is located there in the end of the left direction road, why there was no special occasion there in the past. Additionally, in 1950, there was so much bigger barn constructed opposite the parking lot in the energy area, nevertheless, it is now turned into a holiday cottage, which is likely to be a visitor attraction. In contrast, the farmhouse and chicken farming located in the same zone as the cottage, have experienced no significant changes over the time. Similarly, there is a long river flowing through Beachwood farm, has stay relatively the same thoughout period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying and reporting the main features of the farm in 1950 and today. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the transformation from an agricultural site into a multifunctional area. However, some areas are under-developed or contain slight inaccuracies in reporting specific details, such as misidentifying the location of the former barn or mischaracterising certain developments. Key comparisons are made between the two maps, but the development of ideas lacks the extension and precise support required for a higher band, reflecting a balanced performance that satisfies the core requirements while leaving room for greater precision and depth.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview, and subsequently through the specific spatial comparisons in the body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the farm. Nevertheless, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with transitional phrases like 'To be specific.' and 'Secondly' feeling slightly rigid. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as when referring back to 'the first house located in the Northeast', which hinders the flow of information slightly. Overall, it demonstrates a clear structure that guides the reader through the visual data, though the cohesive ties could be managed more flexibly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to the visual data such as 'multifunctional farm', 'animal husbandry', 'camping field', and 'holiday cottages'. There are several noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'farn' for farm, 'agriculture' instead of agricultural, 'root tree' instead of fruit tree, and awkward collocations like 'fully agriculture site'. While these lexical shortcomings and spelling slips do not severely impede communication, they restrict the vocabulary score, as the range remains somewhat limited and attempts at less common lexical items often involve inaccuracies or inappropriate word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses ('which looks right at the main road') and contrasting structures. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout, including missing articles ('in farm shop', 'in the end of the left direction road'), incorrect prepositions ('in each of the locations', 'over the time'), and structural awkwardness ('why there was no special occasion there in the past'). Punctuation slips, such as stray periods before commas ('To be specific.,'), also occur. These errors rarely impede overall communication, allowing the reader to understand the intended meaning, but they persist frequently enough to prevent a higher rating.
