Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to describe the changes shown in the two maps of Beechwood Farm, but it only partially addresses the requirements of the task. While some key features are identified, such as the conversion of the sheep area into a parking area and camping field, the summary contains inaccuracies regarding the date of the original plan (stating 1960 instead of 1950) and misinterprets certain elements, such as the solar panels and holiday cottages. The overview lacks clarity, and some details are under-developed or missing. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to provide a more accurate and comprehensive overview of the main trends and features without misinterpreting visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The text suffers from a lack of proper paragraphing, as nearly the entire response is presented as a single block of text, which severely hampers the overall structure and logical progression. Although some cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'Furthermore', and 'Moreover' are used, their mechanical and repetitive application fails to create a smooth flow of ideas between sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the spatial relationships between the various farm sections. Organizing the response into a clear introduction, overview, and distinct body paragraphs detailing specific areas would significantly improve readability and logical flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and somewhat repetitive, though it is minimally adequate to convey basic descriptions of the farm sections. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'advancements' and 'sub-divided', but awkward word choices and phrasing, such as 'river is flowing covering the whole farm' and 'oft fruit', reveal inaccuracies that occasionally cause strain for the reader. There are also minor spelling slips, such as 'oft' instead of 'soft'. To achieve a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more precise range of vocabulary related to spatial changes and geographical features, while improving collocation and word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple constructions and basic passive forms. Attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty or awkward, such as in the phrase 'The major development happened in the sheep section that is now converted'. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles (e.g., 'Farm comprises', 'river is flowing'), incorrect prepositions, and verb tense inconsistencies. These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally pause and interpret the intended meaning. Developing better control over complex grammatical patterns, subject-verb agreement, and article usage will greatly enhance grammatical accuracy.
