Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response makes an attempt to compare the two maps of Beechwood Farm, but the information is presented in a very limited and confused way. While some key changes are mentioned, such as the introduction of a camping field and the conversion of the track into roads, the overall selection of features is incomplete and lacks clarity. For instance, the description of the layout is muddled ('farm only have vegetables are just left side of the river and right side of the track'), and important new features like the holiday cottages and farm shop are either poorly described or missed entirely. The overview attempts to contrast the past and present, but it remains underdeveloped. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a clearer, more structured overview of the main trends and select key spatial changes systematically rather than listing isolated details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The organization of the response lacks a clear overall progression. Although the writer attempts to divide the text into paragraphs, the sequencing of ideas feels disjointed and confusing. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as starting sentences with 'About half decade ago' and 'After that, growing farm track changed in the road area,' which fails to create a smooth logical flow between past and present descriptions. Additionally, referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which part of the map is being discussed. Improving cohesion requires using a wider and more accurate range of linking words and structuring each paragraph around a clear thematic idea, such as grouping all agricultural changes together before discussing the new recreational facilities.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices throughout the response, such as 'ilustrates,' 'mininum difference,' 'sheep space,' and 'minimul trees.' Furthermore, some phrases are awkward or unnatural, such as 'alternative all the demands' and 'shape some holiday cottages.' While the writer attempts to use some task-related vocabulary like 'vegetables,' 'fruit trees,' and 'solar panels,' the frequent spelling mistakes and imprecise word choices impede clear communication at times. To progress, the student should expand their range of vocabulary related to spatial changes and map descriptions, and pay closer attention to standard collocations and correct word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures used are very limited, relying mostly on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex structures. There are frequent grammatical errors involving verb tenses, prepositions, and articles, such as 'The two given charts ilustrates,' 'both farmland have mininum difference,' and 'in the middle of both land has a suitable soft fruits.' Sentence boundaries are sometimes blurred, and basic agreement rules are overlooked. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic sentence construction, ensure subject-verb agreement, and use a wider variety of accurate complex structures to describe trends and locations.
